Most people have felt it at some point. A surprise bill shows up. The car needs repairs. Work hours change. Suddenly, financial stress starts affecting everything, including sleep, focus, and even healthcare decisions.

Financial wellness is not about being wealthy or having a perfect budget. It is about having enough control and stability to handle everyday expenses without constant worry.

Here are a few practical steps you can take to make finances feel more manageable over time.

Know where your money is going

Start with a simple review of income and expenses. Many people are surprised by how small recurring costs add up.

Small adjustments can free up money for essentials, savings or paying down debt. The goal is not restriction. It is clarity and control.

Build a small safety cushion

Unexpected expenses happen to everyone. Medical costs, car repairs or sudden schedule changes can quickly disrupt finances.

Saving even a small amount regularly helps. Over time, that cushion can help avoid high-interest debt when surprises occur.

Use tools that make money easier to manage

Digital banking tools make it easier to stay organized and avoid surprises. Many allow you to:

  • Check balances anytime
  • Pay bills online
  • Deposit checks without visiting a branch
  • Set alerts to avoid missed payments or overdrafts
  • Budgeting software

Small conveniences can make managing money feel less overwhelming, especially during busy or stressful periods.

Take Advantage of Free Support Around You

If something is confusing or feels overwhelming, you are not alone. Many community partners, healthcare providers and financial institutions offer free financial guidance to help people understand their options and make confident decisions. Reaching out early can save time, money and stress.

Small steps add up

No one gets everything right with money. But small, consistent steps can reduce financial stress and make it easier to focus on health, work and long-term goals.

A little planning and the right support can help life feel more manageable, leaving more energy for what matters most.

Working in dentistry often feels like a race against the clock, prioritizing volume over connection. You want to make a difference, but administrative burdens and quotas often stand in the way of providing the compassionate, person-first health care you envisioned during dental school. At TrueCare, we believe your career should be defined by the smiles you restore, not the number of patients you see. As a community-focused health center, we empower our providers to build lasting relationships and offer holistic care that transforms lives. Dr. Sheila Love, a Lead Dentist, found that TrueCare offers a unique environment where professional expertise meets genuine community connection.

Discover how she found a professional home that feels like family.

Dr. Sheila Love on What it Means to Restore Smiles and Confidence in San Diego

Love’s experience highlights the profound satisfaction that comes from working in an environment dedicated to health equity. Her story is a testament to the joy found in serving neighbors and the support TrueCare provides to its medical professionals.

“As a dentist with TrueCare, we see infants, young children, teenagers, adults, and older adults. We are there for them for emergencies, and if we cannot handle the scope or the treatment, we have places we can refer them to, and then we follow up to make sure that they have gone to their other offices and appointments. We’re just here to help at the end of the day, and that’s what makes working here so special – giving back,” smiled Dr. Love.

What Do You Like About Working at TrueCare?

Dr. Love gave a simple yet profound reason that she likes working at TrueCare. She said that she likes being a person who can help other people.

“My personal philosophy on providing care to this community is simple – you just always have to do the best that you can. When you do your best and restore their smile, you give them confidence, and that can be life-changing in and of itself,” said Dr. Love.

Beyond the clinical procedures, Dr. Love finds deep purpose in patient education.

She views every appointment as an opportunity to empower individuals with the knowledge they need to maintain their oral health, bridging a critical gap for those who may have never been taught the basics of dental hygiene.

“Education also makes the work more fulfilling. When you teach children and adults how to brush and take care of their own teeth, you’re making an impact that is almost impossible to put into words. It’s amazing how people aren’t taught to take care of their teeth or even their dentures, and I like being the person who can teach them that,” added Dr. Love.

What Does Restoring Smiles Mean at TrueCare?

Revitalizing a patient’s smile is an act of restoring dignity and self-esteem. Dr. Love witnesses firsthand how dental care can reignite a person’s confidence, allowing them to engage with the world joyfully after years of hiding their smile.

“Restoring a person’s smile is really making a difference for that person. People who haven’t smiled in years, you know, you give them new dentures or some new fillings, and you teach them how to smile all over again. When they come back for a check-up, they’re really smiling, and those muscles are working. It’s the best feeling ever,” smiled Dr. Love.

What Does it Mean to Serve Generations of Patients at TrueCare?

TrueCare’s commitment to compassionate health care builds a deep trust that ripples through entire families. Dr. Sheila Love knows she is making a genuine impact when satisfied patients entrust her with the care of their closest relatives, creating a legacy of wellness within the community.

“I feel that I’m making a meaningful difference in this community when people tell me that their sister, mother, brother, son, or daughter will be coming to see me because they’re so happy with what I’ve been doing,” said Dr. Love.

There is a special continuity of care that comes with long tenure at a community health center. Watching patients grow up and eventually bringing in their own children creates a heartwarming cycle of generational health that reinforces the bonds between provider and patient.

“It’s also really meaningful when a patient who I’ve been seeing for 13 or 15 years brings their children to see me. It’s a very good feeling,” said Dr. Love.

What Does it Mean to Serve the Community with TrueCare?

The connection between provider and patient extends well beyond the walls of the exam room. Living and working in the same neighborhoods means Dr. Love often crosses paths with the people she serves, transforming routine errands into joyful reunions that highlight the strength of the TrueCare community.

“It’s been wonderful to serve this community. I was actually out Black Friday shopping, and guess who I saw? One of my patients. We hugged, she introduced me to her daughter, and I introduced her to my sister. We joked around while we were in the long line, and it was wonderful. That’s not the only time I see my patients – I see them everywhere. Sometimes, little kids will run up to me, ‘Dr. Love! Dr. Love! There’s my doctor!” smiled Dr. Love.

These interactions prove that TrueCare providers are viewed as trusted partners and friends rather than distant authority figures.

This rapport allows for personal storytelling and shared life moments, creating a warmth and familiarity that makes the work environment feel incredibly welcoming.

“The way my patients relate to me makes me feel that I’m the right person for the job – they treat me like family, they greet me, and we talk about everything that’s happened since the last time I’ve seen them. I’ve even gotten a kitten from a patient, and he just recently asked how the kitten is doing, and I was like, ‘Well, my old cat hates it, but the good news is that my daughter came over and fell in love with her, and they have the most loving cat now, and she’s so happy,” remembered Dr. Love.

When you work in an atmosphere defined by such strong community ties and mutual respect, the daily grind disappears. Instead of feeling like a job, coming to the health center feels like spending time with a supportive extended family.

“It’s not like being at work. It’s like being with friends and being with family. It’s truly a great place to work every day,” added Dr. Love.

Is There Professional Growth at TrueCare?

TrueCare actively nurtures potential, encouraging team members to step into leadership roles they might not have envisioned for themselves.

The organization fosters a culture of mentorship where colleagues support one another’s expansion, guiding introverts and extroverts alike toward new professional heights.

“The good thing with TrueCare is that they push you to go beyond your scope. I never figured that I would be a lead clinician – I like being in the background. But everyone opens their hearts and their arms, and they guide you,” said Dr. Love.

This commitment to growth is supported by a robust emphasis on continuing education. The organization ensures that every provider has access to the learning opportunities they need to stay at the forefront of dental medicine in a supportive, collaborative environment.

“We’re pushed to take continuing education courses, and everybody is so welcoming. It makes learning and growing easy,” said Dr. Love.

Whether you aspire to administrative leadership or wish to deepen your clinical expertise, TrueCare offers diverse pathways for advancement.

The organization supports your individual career trajectory, ensuring you can flourish in the role that best aligns with your passion and skills.

“TrueCare allows anyone to advance in their career if that’s what they want to do, so if I wanted to be out of the clinic more, there’s always the Dental Director or a position in Operations. But clinical dentistry is my passion, so I’m not going anywhere,” laughed Dr. Love.

Starting a meaningful career in health care can often feel overwhelming, especially when you worry about getting lost in a cold, impersonal system. Many aspiring professionals want to make a tangible difference in their community but struggle to find an organization that actively nurtures their potential. At TrueCare, the experience is different. Working for our nonprofit organization means joining a support team that is deeply invested in your personal and professional success. Here, you are not just a number; you are a vital part of a mission to provide health equity to those who need it most. Josie Vargas, Referral Coordinator, discovered that TrueCare offers a supportive environment where longevity is celebrated, and every contribution is recognized. Learn how Josie found a lasting home and fulfilling career where she empowers patients every day.

How Does Employee Recognition Work at TrueCare?

TrueCare celebrates the hard work of its team through formal recognition programs. Beyond the daily appreciation, the organization presents specific awards to honor those who exemplify our core values, ensuring that dedication does not go unnoticed.

“My most recent personal milestone was Employee of the Year. I’ve actually gotten it twice since being a TrueCare. I got a certificate and a little plaque, and my team all told me that they voted for me and how happy they were for me,” smiled Josie.

However, recognition at TrueCare goes deeper than a simple trophy on a shelf. The process is designed so that colleagues also share heartfelt testimonials about why a specific team member inspires them, making the honor truly emotional and significant.

“When you get the award, everyone will write a little paragraph about why they voted for you, and I’m such a soppy person that they always make me teary-eyed,” joked Josie.

The true power of these moments, Josie revealed, comes from the shared joy of the people you work with every day. It reinforces the tight-knit bonds that make coming to work feel like spending time with friends who root for your success.

“I think it’s great the company acknowledges you, but it’s especially meaningful coming from the team because it’s more personal,” added Josie.

How Do You Know that TrueCare is the Right Workplace for You?

For many, the surest sign of a healthy workplace is retention. Josie Vargas points to the tenure within her department, where colleagues have dedicated decades to the mission, creating a stable, welcoming energy that feels less like an office and more like a family.

“What has confirmed for me that I’m where I want to be is my longevity with TrueCare. I’m going on eight years this year. And it’s not just me. In my own department, we have members who have been here for ten or even twenty years. Most of the department has been here for over five years, actually. I love that because it does feel like family. As soon as you walk through the doors, you feel that energy,” reflected Josie.

Being part of that long-term journey allows team members to play an active role in the organization’s evolution. When you contribute to that expansion and see positive changes unfold over time, you develop a deep sense of ownership and pride in the collective success.

“TrueCare has been through a lot of growth, and I feel like when you experience that growth with the company, you get invested. It becomes like your baby, and you just enjoy being with the company and watching it grow,” said Josie.

What is Rewarding About Patient Care with TrueCare?

Serving the community as a referral coordinator brings unique challenges, but the outcome makes every effort worthwhile.

Guiding patients through complex health scares and helping them find the right resources transforms anxiety into relief, providing a profound sense of purpose for the support team.

“As a referral coordinator working with our community, it can be challenging, but it is really rewarding. We have patients who come in for what they think is a simple issue that turns into something bigger, and we always get the feedback that we really helped them navigate that stressful situation with confidence – they’re always really grateful,” said Josie.

The gratitude expressed by the people we serve is immediate and infectious. Knowing that your assistance provided peace of mind to a neighbor in need creates simple, joyful moments that fuel the passion for community health care.

“How can you not smile when someone’s saying thank you?” beamed Josie.

What is Special About TrueCare’s Personal Approach?

TrueCare distinguishes itself from massive medical systems by prioritizing holistic, relationship-based care. The team takes the time to recognize familiar faces and honor specific requests, ensuring that patients feel known and valued rather than processed through a system.

“What separates TrueCare from bigger organizations is that we’re more personal with our patients. We develop relationships with them because we see the names come up so commonly. Sometimes, the patients will even request to see specific providers,” said Josie.

This philosophy creates a safe space where patients feel comfortable reaching out for help. By offering direct lines of communication and personal follow-through, team members like Josie ensure that every individual feels like a cherished member of the TrueCare family, elevating the standard of quality care.

“I’ve given patients my direct line, and they’ll call me and follow up on things, and I always make sure to help them out. They’re very grateful; they love it. With bigger organizations, I don’t feel that you can do that because everyone’s just a number. But here, they’re part of the TrueCare family,” added Josie.

How Does TrueCare Make You Feel Supported and Valued?

Career advancement and employee recognition are central to the culture at TrueCare.

The organization fosters a transparent and nurturing environment for those looking to advance their education and roles. Ashley’s path shows that hard work is not only noticed but actively rewarded and celebrated.

“I’ve actually gone through various milestones. I started off as a medical assistant. There was a year when I was Employee of the Year. There was also a time when I transitioned from Medical Assistant to Health Partner, and then from Health Partner to LVN. Each one of those times I was celebrated and knew that I was appreciated here,” smiled Ashley.

What is the Power of Understanding with TrueCare’s Diverse Patients?

TrueCare’s dedication to health equity means providing care that meets people where they are and speaks their language. For patients, being able to communicate with a nurse or provider in their native tongue breaks down barriers and builds trust.

Ashley Perez, as a bilingual provider, shared how her ability to speak Spanish plays a vital role in ensuring this inclusive environment is maintained daily.

“I feel like I fit in at TrueCare because I know that most of our patients come from different backgrounds and ethnicities. While they do speak a lot of different languages, most of our population is Spanish-speaking,” explained Ashley.

This ability to connect instantly transforms the patient experience, shifting it from one of potential anxiety to comfort and confidence. This direct, positive feedback is one of the most rewarding parts of working in a Mission-Driven environment like TrueCare.

“When they see a nurse who speaks their language and can communicate in their language, they feel very happy and comfortable – it puts them at ease. You can see the change in their smile when someone understands them and knows what they’re saying,” beamed Ashley.

What Does it Mean to Treat Patients Like Family at TrueCare?

TrueCare champions a “whole-person care” approach, which goes beyond physical health to include compassion for our communities. Ashley applies this philosophy by treating every person she encounters with the warmth and respect she would give her own loved ones.

This practice aligns perfectly with TrueCare’s core commitment to compassionate care.

“All of the patients who come in, I treat them like family. I treat them all like they’re my mom, my dad, my grandma, my grandpa, or a sibling,” reflected Ashley.

This compassionate approach is crucial because patients often arrive during vulnerable or stressful moments. A warm, understanding demeanor can significantly influence their emotional state and willingness to engage with their health care.

“I think that’s what makes TrueCare so special. You don’t know what the patient is going through when they walk through those doors. They could be going through a vulnerable time, and when you treat them with care, respect, and compassion, they are very thankful. They change their mindset and the way they talk to you. At the end of the visit, usually you’ll see the change and the smile on their face,” smiled Ashley.

How Does TueCare Find Solutions to Help the Community?

At TrueCare, our team members are encouraged to speak up about the needs they see in the communities we serve. Open, transparent communication means that when staff identify a problem, the entire organization mobilizes to find compassionate and immediate solutions.

“I think one thing that has been impactful for Perris that we saw a need for is that staff kept saying that there was a lot of food insecurity right now in our community,” recalled Daisy.

The immediate feedback and collaboration between clinic staff and other TrueCare teams quickly led to concrete action. This process demonstrates how TrueCare empowers its support team to be changemakers, not just employees.

“From that feedback, we actually got together with Community Engagement and created our first in-clinic pantry, so now we have a pantry available to patients so they can get immediate relief while they connect with different resources,” explained Daisy.

Taking direct action to support communities that are too often underserved is what makes working for TrueCare so fulfilling. Knowing that your daily efforts contribute to immediate relief and long-term solutions offers unparalleled professional satisfaction.

“I think all of that brings a lot of meaning. It’s really fulfilling to take all of the feedback that I hear from patients, staff, providers, and try to find different ways to offer solutions to the community,” smiled Daisy.

How Does TrueCare Empower You to Have a Positive Impact in the Community?

The daily impact Daisy sees at the health center confirms she is in the right place, driving her motivation to continue leading her team. These small, frequent moments of gratitude from both patients and staff reinforce TrueCare’s core value of being community-oriented.

“Just seeing the impact I’m making every day at the clinic is incredible, whether it’s staff coming in and letting me know they gave food bags to a patient and how grateful the patient was, or just sharing the stories of how patients are thankful for certain services or the education and resources provided that they never had before,” said Daisy.

These impactful moments serve as a powerful daily reminder of TrueCare’s Mission-Driven purpose and the collective commitment to health equity. It’s this connection to purpose that transforms a job into a career you are proud of.

“It’s those little moments that really encourage me and remind me every day that I’m in the right spot,” said Daisy with pride.

What Does it Mean for TrueCare to Make Patients Feel Welcome?

TrueCare’s commitment to providing a welcoming, high-quality experience is immediately visible to patients the moment they enter one of our health centers.

Attention to detail in the physical environment signals TrueCare is dedicated to providing compassionate care and deep respect for every person who walks through the door.

“We’ve gotten so many comments from our patients that our building is so beautiful and that they’ve never had a facility that accepted their insurance look like this. That’s something we take a lot of pride in at the Perris location,” said Daisy.

Ensuring the facility reflects the high standard of care provided is a key component of TrueCare’s approach to health equity and patient dignity. For Daisy, this small effort creates a massive impact on the patient experience.

“I look around every day to make sure everything looks good. If things are not painted or they need a touch-up, tickets are made. Something like that is really impactful for our patients, and they feel proud coming to our facilities, and we share that pride,” added Daisy.

“Something that I do notice that TrueCare is really ahead of the game in is the investment in their buildings and facilities,” reflected Daisy.

This significant investment in facilities and equipment directly translates into a superior patient experience, reinforcing the feeling that patients are getting the best possible care. For team members, this means they have the resources they need to excel in their roles.

“This goes a long way in terms of making it a great experience for the patient because they feel like they are in a great building and getting the best possible care. They’ve noticed that we have state-of-the-art equipment that they’ve never even seen,” beamed Daisy.

The level of equipment TrueCare provides often exceeds what is available even in some private practices, an observation that makes a strong statement about the nonprofit organization’s commitment to its team and patients.

This is particularly true in specialty fields like dentistry.

“I’ve also gotten feedback from dentists like, ‘Wow, you guys have these dental chairs that you don’t even see in some private offices.’ Things like that let me know that TrueCare is serious about investing in the equipment and facilities,” recalled Daisy.

Summary

In this episode, Dr. O sits down with Leticia Vera to talk about what keeps people from getting health care coverage and what actually helps patients enroll. As TrueCare’s director of patient retention and engagement, Leticia sees the real-life impact of misinformation, fear and confusing applications. Together they walk through how one-on-one support for Medi-Cal, Covered California and CalFresh can turn “I don’t think I qualify” into active coverage and access to care, as well as the importance of applying before January 1 2026 or renew on time to retain insurance.

Key Takeaways

Trust and clarity change everything. Many people think Medi-Cal is only for kids or emergencies, or that working disqualifies them. When someone takes the time to explain options, walk through forms and follow up, the system feels less hostile and more human.

Barriers stack up fast. Language, transportation, technology gaps, past negative experiences and immigration worries all make it harder to start. TrueCare’s enrollment specialists don’t just point to a website; they stay with people from first question to approval and beyond.

Whole-person care includes food and daily habits. Help with CalFresh and community resources keeps food on the table while insurance unlocks specialty care. Simple practices like movement, hydration and better sleep still matter more than quick fixes.

What We Covered

People rarely show up wondering whether they “deserve” coverage; they show up wondering if they even qualify. Leticia hears the same themes: I thought Medi-Cal was just for my kids. I’m working now, so I probably don’t count. I don’t want to mess something up with my immigration status. Add in confusing forms, online portals that don’t feel friendly and long call-center waits, and it’s easy to see why people give up.

Dr. O provides insight into the clinical side of that gap. Without insurance, patients often delay specialty care, surgery or diagnostic tests until problems are urgent. Referrals don’t mean much if someone can’t afford to see the specialist. That’s where TrueCare’s enrollment team comes in: they explain the differences between Medi-Cal, Covered California plans and other options, complete and submit applications, upload documents and follow up with agencies so coverage actually goes through.

TrueCare’s enrollment team doesn’t just hand patients a packet; they walk with people every step of the way. The goal isn’t a finished form; the goal is a card in someone’s wallet and a real appointment on the calendar. Leticia’s team also screens for food needs and helps patients apply for CalFresh or connect with local food distributions because worrying about groceries and worrying about copays often go hand in hand.

To close the episode, Dr. O answers a few of the health questions he hears most often at our health centers. For stress, he recommends deep breathing, short walks, stretching and consistent sleep routines instead of pushing through burnout. For most adults, aiming for about 8 to 12 cups of water a day (2 to 3 liters) helps prevent dehydration, but personal needs vary based on health history and medications. And yes, eating a heavy meal right before bed can make heartburn and sleep worse, so spacing dinner 2 to 3 hours before lying down is usually a better plan.

Consuelo Razo‘s dedication to her profession and her hometown community is the cornerstone of her career. Her path to becoming a Supervisor at Mission Mesa Pediatrics is a clear example of how TrueCare supports its team in achieving their professional goals.

“I have been on and off at TrueCare for over 20 years. I started as an MA, and then I decided to go back to school and returned as an RN, and I’ve been with TrueCare as an RN for the last 10 or 15 years in different positions, and I’ve been at Mission Mesa Pediatrics for about 7 years,” explained Consuelo.

What Keeps Bringing Consuelo Back to TrueCare?

Consuelo’s career with TrueCare has been an on-again, off-again affair spanning over 20 years. Every time she looked for a professional home, she found herself drawn back.

Consuelo revealed that she has also wondered what it is that has proven to be so magnetic about our organization and continued to pull her back to pull her back.

“I’ve asked myself that question as well, and I feel like the answer to that is that I enjoy working for the community I grew up in. I was born and raised here in Oceanside, and I like being that support and providing those services to my community,” said Consuelo.

What’s it Look Like to Provide Support to Your Community?

Our conversation eventually turned to what it means for her to give back to her community and help elevate it through exceptional and accessible care that meets populations that are too often underserved where they’re at.

“I support the community by using my bilingual skills with Spanish and English, by taking a different role than I had before, and by providing a greater depth of service. I can spend a little bit more time with the patient and help out in a different way while being hands-on with the community. I feel like I’m always making a difference,” Consuelo stated.

Ultimately, Consuelo said the mission-driven approach to everything we do is what has made this work exceedingly more meaningful.

“Over the years, even after school, I just kept finding myself being drawn back to the community side again. Here, I learned that I can serve the community in a different role, and that’s really what makes it so special,” said Consuelo.

She said that the key to providing excellent service to the community is being positive.

“I consider myself a positive person. If we see a patient or a child or one of our patients crying, or if we see that they’re having a bad day or are scared, I’m always trying to make sure they feel comfortable and we provide the feedback or support they need at that moment,” said Consuelo.

What Growth Opportunities Are There at TrueCare?

Consuelo’s journey from Medical Assistant (MA) to Registered Nurse (RN) is a prime example of the growth opportunities available at our nonprofit organization. Consuelo said she made the decision to go back to school to amplify her impact.

“I went back to school because I figured out I really wanted to be in the medical field, and as a medical assistant, I learned a lot. It made me realize that I could do more than I thought I could, and that inspired me to keep developing in this field,” said Consuelo.

This pursuit of growth is supported by TrueCare’s culture, which emphasizes professional development. Now, as a supervisor, Consuelo is involved in the training process for new staff, helping them flourish and thrive.

“It’s important to remember you don’t just make a difference in the external community. Here, you make a difference in your colleagues’ lives by being part of the training process for whoever joins the team. It’s not just one – it’s everybody. We operate by the maxim that it takes a village in that way. I enjoy knowing that they learned a lot by being here. We embrace them and just make sure that they can continue learning, and as a result, that elevates the level of care. Everyone wins,” noted Consuelo as she meditated on her commitment to mentorship and the future of health care.

What’s the Team Culture at Mission Mesa Pediatrics?

Working in pediatrics requires an extra layer of skill, including patience and deep compassion. However, as she put it, pediatrics has always been her passion.

Consuelo believes the TrueCare culture is uniquely built to support this demanding, yet rewarding, field. Her favorite part of the Mission Mesa team culture? The snacks.

“We are definitely what I call a snack culture. We are always sharing new snacks from different places. Anywhere we go, we’re always thinking about whether or not the team would like to try something. I think that’s what keeps us going. Just knowing that we support each other and always thinking about how we can make each other happy,” said Consuela when ruminating on what has brought her team so close together.

She said that this culture, predicated on being considerate, extends beyond snacks.

“Everybody is the same here. We’re always thinking about each other. It’s what makes everyone close with their coworkers. If someone on the team loves a certain, we bring it and share,” smiled Consuelo.

Consuelo’s experience is a powerful indicator of the benefits of working at TrueCare, from career growth and excellent benefits to being part of a truly compassionate team.

Consuelo even pulled from her decades of experience and provided indispensable guidance for applicants looking for a new professional chapter.

“We’re always striving to make things better. We’re not perfect, but every day we strive to be better. If you have a growth mindset, you would love to work at a place like TrueCare,” said Consuelo.

Why is TrueCare a Great Place to Practice Pediatrics?

As for what makes TrueCare an incredible place to practice pediatrics specifically, she provided keen insights gleaned from decades of experience. For those looking to enter pediatrics, Consuelo highlights three essential skills:

  1. Compassion
  2. Patience
  3. Really good listening skills

“TrueCare is a good place to practice pediatrics because there are so many different resources for our pediatric population. It’s definitely a unique skill that you might have to work to acquire. It’s not something I came into TrueCare with, but once I was experiencing what it was, I really fell in love with being in pediatrics. The rest was history,” said Consuelo.

She adds that the most rewarding part of her job is seeing kids as newborns until they graduate and being able to experience different stages of their lives alongside them.

“There is no shortage of blessings when you get to see the children grow and move onto adult care – being a part of that process is beautiful,” said Consuelo.

Are you looking for a fulfilling career on a support team where your organizational skills and dedication directly impact patient care? Do you want a workplace where you can grow professionally while being a vital piece of a mission-driven organization? Meet Marisol Baltazar, or “Mari” for short, the Lead Medical Receptionist (MR) at our Mission Mesa Pediatrics health center. Marisol’s 25-year career with our organization demonstrates how vital the support team is to maintaining the high standard of care for which we are known and what it means to find a professional home where your work truly matters.

Learn how Marisol found purpose in her support team role at TrueCare Mission Mesa, focusing on our culture of growth, integrity, and teamwork.

Marisol Baltazar on Finding Purpose in Health Care Support Jobs at TrueCare

Marisol’s commitment to TrueCare is rooted in her desire to launch a career in health care administration and contribute to a nonprofit organization that prioritizes the community.

Her role ensures that the entire clinic runs smoothly, enabling providers to deliver prompt, compassionate care. If you are looking for a transparent and nurturing workplace environment that empowers our team to grow in their roles within the organization, Marisol’s experience showcases the impact of a dedicated support team member.

Why Did You Join TrueCare?

Marisol reflected on what it was that drew her to the organization initially.

“When I found out TrueCare was hiring, I came and did an internship. I had gone to school to become an MA. I was hired right after my internship as an MA and pediatric referral connector. Then, I had different roles throughout these 25 years,” recalled Marisol.

Throughout her career, Marisol said she has worked in both pediatrics and with adults.

What is it Like Working as an MR at TrueCare?

Marisol’s dedication to accurate and accessible patient data is critical to our mission. As the Lead MR, she is the engine that keeps information flowing seamlessly, directly impacting patient and provider efficiency.

“My job is crucial for the whole team because I’m the first person that the patients come in contact with when they’re checking in, and I’m verifying their insurance or taking copayments. I ensure all patient records are accurate, secure, and accessible to our providers and nurses so they can deliver timely care. I’m basically the person who keeps the information flowing smoothly between the patient, the front desk, and the medical team. It takes a lot of teamwork and attention to detail,” said Baltazar.

Marisol also touched on what, for her, is the most fulfilling part of being on the TrueCare support team – contributing to our mission of removing the traditional barriers to life-changing care that the community we serve often faces.

“The most rewarding part is knowing that even though I’m not hands-on with the patients, my work directly supports the compassionate care they receive. When a provider gets the right record instantly, and a patient gets the help they need, I feel like I made a huge difference. We serve our neighbors, and that feels good,” said Marisol.

She said that working at TrueCare Mission Mesa Pediatrics also means working in a great location.

“I really love this location because of the walks that we do. There are a lot of staff members who walk around here. There is a park close by, but also, when you’re walking down the main street, you’re able to see the palm trees, and sometimes you can even get an ocean view,” smiled Marisol.

Marisol said that, in addition to the stunning location, she also enjoys seeing the difference she makes in the community members.

“Every time I see or come in contact with a patient outside of work, they always come and greet me, and that brings me great joy because they’re able to come and stop and say hi. That means that I have touched somebody and made a difference, and there’s really no better feeling than that – no matter what field you work in. Really, just seeing patients getting better brings me immense joy,” said Marisol.

Have You Felt Supported in Your Career Growth at TrueCare?

Marisol’s 25-year journey is a perfect example of the professional growth opportunities at TrueCare. Starting as a Medical Records Clerk and progressing to a leadership role, she has been continuously supported in her professional development.

“I was hired as an MA, and then I moved to being a referral creator and the program resource specialist. From there, when this office opened up the new location, I transferred and became the lead medical receptionist. I started as a basic Medical Records Clerk, and they recognized my attention to detail and commitment. I was promoted to Lead MR five years ago. TrueCare offers constant opportunities for training and development,” said Marisol.

This involvement in daily team communication aligns with TrueCare’s value of transparency and constant communication between management and direct reports through one-to-ones and regular huddles.

“I love that TrueCare always gives the opportunity to those who may not have all the experience they need. We are willing to train anybody as long as they’re teachable, passionate, and willing to learn,” said Marisol.

What is Your Favorite Part of the TrueCare Team Culture?

At TrueCare, the support team is encouraged to bring their complete and authentic selves to work. Marisol notes that this inclusivity fosters a strong sense of belonging that makes the long-term commitment so rewarding.

“I really enjoy working with the people here. It’s incredible. As cliché as it sounds, they have truly become like family; they’re far more than just coworkers or even friends to me. We’ve been there for each other through thick and thin and all kinds of difficult situations. Everyone here has touched my heart in one way or another,” beamed Baltazar.

When asked about her favorite component of our team culture, she was quick to answer.

“My favorite part of the culture is the sense of belonging. We are a diverse team, and everyone is accepted as they are. We share everything, from potlucks to celebrating birthdays. It’s a place where you can genuinely be yourself and feel connected to a larger mission,” said Baltazar.

Baltazar said that this culture starts at the top.

“It starts with leadership. We have this connection with each other because we connect with each other personally and professionally, and we help each other out. We’re there for each other, whether that means helping with a coworker, a family member, a friend, a patient, or whatever,” explained Baltazar.

Outside of TrueCare, Marisol reinforces her commitment to the community by volunteering at a local food bank.

“These kinds of activities reinforce my belief in community and compassion. It’s not just a job motto, it’s how I live. That’s really important if you want to work here. We’re so close because we all have a shared mission – we want to help each other. We have a passion to serve our community that drives that,” said Marisol.
